This week I was honoured to speak about a letter I wrote to Environment Minister Andrea Khanjin inspired by students at Hopewell Public School. After my remarks, I hand-delivered the letter to Minister Khanjin, along with several personal notes the students wrote themselves.
As the students explained to me, 37 of Canada’s 51 populations of boreal caribou are deemed “not self-sustaining” by experts. Ontario’s recent decision to allow logging, mining and road construction on Crown land has made this worse.
The federal government has asked Ontario to revise its current strategy, with a deadline of April 2024 for re-submission. I will keep you apprised of this matter as I continue to push for better results.
