On July 29th, 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, Old Ottawa South's Linda Thom won a gold medal in the women's 25 m Pistol event. This win meant that Thom became the first woman to win a gold medal in shooting, the first Canadian woman to win a gold medal in the Summer Olympics since 1928 and the first Canadian to win a gold medal in the Summer Olympics since 1968.
